Kollywood is the name given to Tamil Cinema. Tamil Cinema is based in Kodambakkam on the outskirts of Chennai. The name Kollywood came from Kodambakkam and the way movie industries are named based on Hollywood.
Presence outside Tamil Nadu
Outside Tamil Naud, the Tamil Speaking State of India, Tamil Cinema has an established presence in the neighboring states of Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Delhi. In the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Movies are released after dubbing into Telugu.
Tamil Cinema also has established a Global Presence since the 1990s. It has a presence in Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Japan, the Middle East, parts of Africa, Oceania, Europe, and North America. Apart from Kollywood, there is an independent Tamil Filmmaking in countries like Srilanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Europe, and North America.
Tamil Film History
In 1897, M. Edwards first screened a selection of silent short films at the Victoria Public Hall in Madras, known as Chennai now.
In 1905, Swamikannu Vincent, a railway draftsman from Tiruchirapalli, showed short movies in a tent in Esplanade, near the present Parry’s Corner.
In 1909, Raghupathy Venkiah Naidu, a successful photographer, set up a tent cinema near the Madras High Court and screen films like Pearl Fish and Raja’s Casket. This move was very successful and received very well by all quarters of the people in Madras.
In 1914, Mr. Naidu built a permanent Cinema House in Madras – Gaiety, the first cinema house in Madras to be built by an Indian.
In 1918, R. Nataraja Mudaliar. made the first silent film in Tamil, Keechaka Vadham.
In 1929, A. Narayanan laid the foundation of the South Indian Cinema with the incorporation of General Picture Corporation known as GPC which produced 24 films.
In 1931, the first South Indian Sound Film Kalidas was made in Tamil.
In 1934, First Sound Studio was set up in Madras by Mr. Narayana and the first south Indian sound move Srinivasa Kalyanam was made.
